WHAT IS THE PROVINCIAL EXCISE TAX?
The Province of Alberta has introduced amendments to the Federal Excise Act, 2001 to implement a new excise duty framework on vaping products specific to Alberta. An excise tax is a legislated tax imposed on specific goods, such as alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis products.
The Alberta Provincial tax is in addition to the current Federal Tax.
As of January 1, 2025, manufacturers began charging a Provincial excise tax on their products. LifestylE Cig has until March 31, 2025 to sell through all remaining Federal tax products. The additional tax is calculated on a per millilitre basis with the breakdown as follows:
$1 for the first 2ml, $5 for the first 10ml and $2 per 10ML thereafter.
HOW WILL THIS IMPACT YOU?
An example of the Alberta excise tax with industry standard bottle sizes are as follows:
$7.84 per 30mL, $11.20 per 60mL, and $17.92 per 120mL.
LifestylE Cig will be implementing the Alberta excise tax to all vaping liquids, pre-filled pods and disposables starting March 2025 or earlier where applicable. For all applicable items ordered (Eliquid, Salt Nic, Disposables, Pre-Filled Pods) the Excise tax amount will be included in the per item charge with applicable taxes to be included at the time of checkout unless only the Federal tax products apply.

IS VAPING STILL COST EFFECTIVE?
Along with being the safer option, it is important for vapers to note that even with the new excise tax, vaping is still more cost effective than smoking traditional cigarettes. Additionally, the tax is only applicable to products that contain eliquid and will not be charged on hardware, such as coils.
SMOKING: In Alberta, the average cost of a pack of 20 to 25 cigarettes ranges from $15.25 to $25.60, with an average price of $20.43. The price of cigarettes has gone up 54.26% since 2020. Assuming a pack a day smoker, this translates to $633.33 per month, or approx. $7,456.95 per year.
VAPING: Based on feedback from our customers, the average vapor uses approximately 5ml of eliquid per day. At the eliquid price (including excise tax) this translates to a 120ml bottle of our eliquid lasting the average customer 24 days. This is a daily cost of $2.91, which is at minimum 86% cheaper than a pack of cigarettes.
